Heritage of Excellence
Argiano, one of the oldest estates in Montalcino (over 500 years of documented history), is a benchmark for quality Sangiovese. Under the stewardship of winemaker Bernardino Sani, the estate emphasizes organic farming, dry farming, and careful vineyard management. Their vines, some over 50 years old, are nurtured on marl and limestone soils in southwest Montalcino, producing fruit of exceptional health and concentration.
A Vintage to Remember
The 2021 Brunello di Montalcino demonstrates the resilience and precision of Argiano’s vineyards. Despite a harsh April frost, the vines recovered to yield fruit with vibrant aromatics, Mediterranean herbal notes, and a saline minerality that is unmistakably Argiano. On the palate, this wine offers velvety tannins, fresh acidity, and a broad, elegant finish, aged 30 months in Slavonian and French oak to balance structure with immediate appeal. In fact, we tried this bottle late last week. We just popped and poured and it was lovely immdediately. No doubt a little time in a decanter (or bottle) will serve it well.
Jeb Dunnuck: 94 Points
Displaying a bright, transparent red color and coming mostly from oceanic soils of the property, the 2021 Brunello Di Montalcino is highly appealing on opening, with notes of red cherries, cranberries, orange peel, fennel, and fresh herbs. It brings great energy and focus to the palate, with a medium-bodied frame, and it resonates with a refreshing spine of acidity, well-defined, angular tannins, and wonderful length. A fabulous wine, it will be worth it to stash a few bottles away. Drink 2026-2046.
Vinous Media: 94 Points
The 2021 Brunello di Montalcino is dark and intense, with a smoldering bouquet of ashen stones, grilled herbs and dried black cherries. It is surprisingly energetic and lifted in feel, with racy red berry fruits and rosy inner florals that form a truly satisfying experience. The 2021 is pleasantly chewy and long, leaving a coating of fine-grained tannins and a nuance of tart blackberry.
James Suckling: 94 Points
Aromas of cherries, orange blossom and white cedar with a hint of juniper follow through to a medium body, firm and silky tannins and a bright, polished finish. Linear and tight. Lovely length. Succulent and satisfying with a crisp finish. From organically grown grapes. Best after 2027.
Wine Advocate: 93 Points
With more than 500 years of documented winemaking history (with a villa and cellars dating back to 1580), Argiano is one of the oldest and most important estates in Montalcino. The 2021 Brunello di Montalcino shows consistency and a velvety texture with blackberry and blackcurrant. There is good freshness here, and the wine is a rather lean in terms of mouthfeel. This is a more accessible wine, with a release of 130,000 bottles.
