Champagne Taittinger is one of the rare Champagne houses that remains under family ownership and operation. This company is notable for its vast vineyards, encompassing 712 acres, which include esteemed Grand Cru plots in the Côte des Blancs and Montagne de Reims regions. Unlike most large producers, Champagne Taittinger primarily uses grapes from its own estates for its range of Champagnes. The house is also known for incorporating a higher proportion of Chardonnay in its wines, contributing to Taittinger’s distinctive style, and for aging its wines significantly longer than legally required, a practice that defines Taittinger.
François Taittinger, son of the founder Pierre Taittinger, established the standards for the lightness and delicacy that characterize Taittinger’s style. He was instrumental in developing the vineyards, ensuring that Taittinger could be self-sufficient and could emphasize the Chardonnay grape. Taittinger’s vineyards are planted with 37% Chardonnay, compared to the regional average of 27%. With the help of renowned master blender Roger Lénique, François Taittinger set rigorous quality standards for the wines. He opted to use only aged Champagnes in the dosage instead of brandies or fortified wines and limited production to fully dry, brut Champagnes. This demanded impeccable wines made exclusively from the first pressing of the grapes. The increased use of Chardonnay, the priciest of the Champagne grapes, allowed him to achieve the desired refinement and elegance in his cuvées.
Maintaining the legacy and standards set by François, Champagne Taittinger continues to thrive under the leadership of Vitalie and Clovis Taittinger, the great-grandchildren of the founder.
We'll have the following Champagnes open:
