Few names in the Northern Rhône command as much respect as Domaine Alain Graillot. Founded in 1985 by Alain Graillot the domaine quickly rose to prominence for its soulful, energetic expressions of Syrah grown in the stony soils of Crozes-Hermitage. Today, the domaine is helmed by Alain’s sons, Maxime and Antoine, who have continued their father's legacy by keeping everything just as it was: organic farming, hand-harvesting, 100% whole-cluster fermentation with native yeasts in concrete vats, and aging in previously used Burgundy barrels from top domaines.
The 2022 Crozes-Hermitage is a dense expression. Sourced from vines over 30 years old in the village of Les Chênes Verts where the terroir is known for intense minerality, the wine opens with dark, brooding layers of black cherry and blackberry fruit, accented by cracked black pepper, cured meat, and savory olives. The whole-cluster fermentation brings a nervy tension to the wine, contributing lifted aromatics and grippy tannins. There's a tactile sense of energy here—classic Graillot Syrah that is both structured and vibrant.
James Suckling: 94 Points
A textural, balanced and harmonious red with such patina already. The nose shows notes of dark cherries, fresh plums, forest floor and warm spices. Medium-bodied with fine tannins. Dense and velvety, with a kick of peppercorns. Juicy, vivid and fresh finish. Drink or hold.
