Aluvia is a small, terroir-driven project rooted in the limestone and high altitude vineyards of Gualtallary in Argentina’s Uco Valley. The estate takes its name from the region’s alluvial soils which marry with limestone and works with a restrained philosophy: guide the vineyard carefully, intervene sparingly, and allow place to define personality. The result is a style that delivers a level of character and seriousness that far exceeds what most expect from a wine in this tier.
The vineyards sit in Gualtallary in the Uco Valley, among the highest sites in Mendoza. Days are bright and sunny while nights turn sharply cool, a combination that preserves freshness while still allowing full ripeness. The soils are rocky alluvial material covered in calcareous limestone which naturally keeps yields in check. Harvest starts in early April and everything is picked by hand, then carefully sorted and gently destemmed (90%) so the fruit stays intact and clean.
In the cellar, the 2022 Cabernet Franc ferments in stainless steel before an extended maceration of roughly 25 days builds color and fine tannin. Aging in seasoned French oak refines texture without masking the vineyard or varietal character. The finished wine balances red fruit, spice, and subtle herbal tones with polished structure and mineral drive. It lands in a compelling middle ground: the poise and aromatic elegance reminiscent of the Loire, carried on the supple, radiant fruit that only high-altitude sunshine can deliver. It's an impressive bottle with depth, authenticity and typicity.
James Suckling: 94 Points
This opens with aromas of paprika, black pepper and red cherries. The palate is refined and tense, with focused, precise tannins. The tight, restrained fruit is gently lifted by subtle juiciness, adding balance and a touch of roundness to the finish. Drink now.
Vinous Media: 92 Points
The 2022 Cabernet Franc from Gualtallary is full of ripe blackberry and cassis notes with touches of ash and soft jalapeño framed by subtle oak. The palate presents chalky tannins and broad flow, with a juicy, black-fruited finish.
