Chateau La Grande Roche Description
Chateau La Grande Roche is a label produced by the husband and wife team of
Ric Forman and Cheryl Emmolo, two of the doyens of Napa Valley winemaking
and agriculture.
The name La Grande Roche derives from the fact that the Forman Vineyard is
replete with gravel and indeed the property itself is surrounded by large boulders
(‘grandes roches’) in something akin to a French clos. It is 100% estate fruit from
the property and in a further nod to the French, serves as a ‘second wine’ to the
Forman Estate Cabernet Sauvignon; one could liken it to Carruades de Lafite or
Forts de Latour from the great respective properties in Bordeaux.
Winemaking and fruit sources for Chateau La Grande Roche are exactly the
same as for the Forman Cabernet, save that this wine is reared in seasoned
rather than new, French oak barrels. Like the grand vin, this wine is produced in
small quantities and is typically available for only a limited window after release.
Year after year, this is a terrific bottle of wine that bears all the hallmarks of its
rarefied sibling, and a remarkable value in estate-grown Cabernet from one of
the most illustrious vineyards in Napa Valley.
