James Suckling: 96-97 Points
A Pomerol with gorgeous crushed-berry, walnut, hazelnut and chocolate character, as well as a full body with ultra fine tannins that frame the wine beautifully. Extremely long finish. Three super wines in a row since 2018.
Antonio Galloni: 96 Points
The 2020 Clos L'Eglise is not as showy as it was from barrel, perhaps because of its recent bottling. Bright red-toned fruit, spice, mint, blood orange and rose petal are all laced together. En primeur, Clos L'Eglise was quite powerful, but I see more finesse today. Even so, this is one of the most concentrated Clos L'Eglises ever, since surpassed by the 2022, though!
Jeb Dunnuck: 95-97 Points
Based on 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc raised in 70% new French oak, the 2020 Château Clos L'Eglise is a beauty that’s going to match the magical 2009 and 2016. Dense purple-hued, with stunning notes of black cherries, cassis, graphite, licorice, and crushed stone, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, classic Pomerol elegance and purity, and a great finish. This is a magical, concentrated, blockbuster of a wine that somehow stays and delicate and ethereal as they come. Don't miss it!
Neal Martin: 94 Points
The 2020 Clos l'Eglise, which was rather reticent en primeur, is now more expressive on the nose with blackberry, raspberry, cedar and freshly-rolled tobacco, becoming ever more floral with aeration. There is a lot of horsepower here. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, slightly granular in texture, immense depth and weight. Yes, there are some wood tannins the will need to be assimilated, but that just needs cellar and a bit of patience.
Wine Advocate: 93 Points
Aromas of ripe plums and raspberries mingled with hints of rose petals and toasty new oak preface the 2020 Clos l'Eglise, a medium to full-bodied, velvety and enveloping wine with a broad attack that segues into a fleshy core of fruit, with powdery extract asserting itself on the youthfully chewy finish.
