According to Pitiot, Longbois is an amalgam of two words; long and woods (bois), 'longwoods.' As one winemaker put it, the vineyard is "A long plot of land formerly planted with trees." As a vineyard of altitude, nearly 1,150ft above Beaune, Longbois plays right into the 'tense, crystalline' style of the Domaine. The soils are shallow and reveal a touch of clay and of course, limestone. The site's altitude also contributes to generally cooler growing conditions which preserves acidity. It is rated as a village level vineyard.
