A blend of 40% Grenache Noir, 30% Carignan, and 30% Syrah, sourced from vineyards boasting an average vine age of 30 to 40 years. The terroir encompasses the unique essence of approximately 20 small parcels nestled on schists, imparting distinct characteristics to the wine.
Roc des Anges is a labor of love, born from the passion of a talented couple, Marjorie and Stéphane. Marjorie hails from Grenoble and was raised in the Northern Rhône, while Stéphane's roots lie in the picturesque region of Normandy. Destiny brought them together during their studies at the agronomy school in Montpellier. In 2001, united by their shared dedication to winemaking, they founded Roc des Anges.
Since 2008, Roc des Anges has been committed to organic viticulture, certified to uphold the highest standards in sustainability. Furthermore, the estate practices biodynamic principles, even though it remains uncertified since 2011. This dedication to environmentally friendly practices reflects their deep respect for nature and terroir.
The winemaking process for their whites is meticulously executed, involving whole-cluster pressing and settling without cooling. Utilizing ambient yeast fermentation in barrels and foudres, with minimal sulfur additions, the winemakers let the terroir's intrinsic qualities shine through. The Imalaya is 100% Carignan Gris, a nearly extinct grape varitey with only 20ha planted in all of France.
The winemaking process for their reds involves gentle destemming, followed by ambient yeast fermentation with pieds de cuve in closed concrete tanks, extending for 7 days. After pressing, the wine is racked back to tanks to complete fermentation, foregoing temperature control, punching down, or pump overs to preserve the grape's genuine expression. Aging for roughly 10 months in tanks further refines the wine. With no fining and light filtration, the final product showcases its pure terroir-driven identity.
