Frèdèric tells us that this wine is a combination of parcels close to Pommard and Meursault totalling just over 2.5ha.
One of our most anticipated stops every year is the one we make at Domaine Lafarge. In the heart of Volnay, their cellars date to the 13th century and impart a sense of history that even other venerable cellars cannot.
And then, there are the wines. They are made in a low-tech but detail oriented environment. According to Frederic, there is only about 15% new oak in the entire Domaine. Though some of the older reconditioned barrels look like they could have been subject to a thought experiment similar to “Theseus’ Paradox '' therefore making them new and increasing the percentage on site? That is a debate for another forum...It is safe to say that the wines are traditionally made and little new oak is used.
Neal Martin: 89-91 Points
The 2017 Volnay Village has a playful, joyous bouquet with tart red cherries and crushed strawberry. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannin, brisk and breezy with the structure finally surfacing towards the finish. Enjoy over the next 12 to 15 years.
Burghound: 89-91 Points
An appealingly layered nose is also admirably fresh and bright with its mix of various red and dark berries that also display hints of spice and earth. The rich and attractively textured medium weight flavors manage to retain equally good detail on the softly mineral-inflected finish that it at once finer, more complex, longer and better balanced.
Wine Advocate
Bursting with aromas of violets, rose petal and sweet wild berries, the 2017 Volnay Village is medium-bodied, silky and elegant, with a lively core of juicy fruit, melting tannins and a pure finish. If the Vendanges Sélectionées bottling is built for the cellar, this will deliver immense pleasure in its youth.
