The Chave family has produced wines in the Rhône Valley for five centuries, earning themselves one of the strongest reputations in the wine world. That said, one might expect current generation Jean-Louis (possibly the most thoughtful, hard-working winemaker we've ever met) to do at least a little resting on his laurels. Not the case. On top of running the family domaine, Jean-Louis spends an inordinate amount of time on the JL Chave Selection Label, championing a number of quality wines from subregions throughout the Rhône.
While his delicious Côtes-du-Rhône "Mon Coeur" is technically made from purchased fruit, Jean-Louis has more or less complete control over the farming, which is all organic. Fermentation is in stainless steel tanks and élevage is in an assortment of new and old barrels, demi-muids and large foudres. Essentially a 50/50 split of Syrah and Grenache, the "Mon Coeur" is balanced and light on its feet while maintaining a solid structure; red to black to blue fruit co-mingles with smoky spice, cedar, and vanilla. We love taking this wine to a party, as it's sure to please anyone wise enough to take a sip!

Matt Gundlach Says: Good inexspensive Syrah is one of the joys of the wine world in my opinion. Get it a little fruity up front with some signature smokiness and add in a little black peppercorn and you have the perfect wine for nearly anything off the grill (and I love to grill). Chave's Cote du Rhone contains Grenache but it is heavy on the Syrah if you compare it with 'normal' blends in this category. This vintage is fantastic. It captures the richness this bottling normally posesses but also with a really enjoyable savory element and elegance.
