James Suckling: 93 Points
Lovely black-cherry nose with some rooty nuances. Generous body with plenty of fruit wrapped around the solid core of moderately dry tannin. Bold and crisp finish. From a 1.4 hectare site in Jadot’s sole possession.
Burghound: 91-93 Points
A notably ripe yet still quite fresh nose mixes notes of red and blue pinot fruit with those of earth, spice and anise. Here too the medium weight flavors possess an attractive texture on the robust and powerful finish that is youthfully austere. As is usually the case, this is a muscular but not rustic Volnay 1er.
Neal Martin: 90-92 Points
The 2019 Volnay Clos de la Barre 1er Cru demonstrates more finesse and coherence compared to the Santenots, offering pure dark cherry and boysenberry fruit mixed with light violet aromas. The lush, generous palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a silky-smooth texture and layers of black cherry and cassis toward the seductive finish. Just very... Volnay.
Wine Advocate: 90-92 Points
The 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Barre Monopole (Maison Louis Jadot) is more structured than the Mitans, bursting with aromas of plums, candied peel, spices and toasty new oak. Medium-bodied, chalky and a little reserved on this showing, I expect it to round out nicely.(WK)
