Since 1956, Michele Chiarlo has been capturing the essence of Piedmont through his wines, cultivating 110 hectares across Langhe, Monferrato, and Gavi with a commitment to ecological practices and terroir expression. Chiarlo was an early pioneer of malolactic fermentation in Italy, producing wines with greater stability and approachability. His winemaking approach emphasizes rigorous grape selection from renowned vineyard sites, with extensive oak and bottle aging for exceptional quality—standards he upheld even before DOC regulations existed. His legacy continues today through the involvement of his sons, Alberto and Stefano, who lead marketing and vineyard management, respectively.
Barolo "Cannubi" - Perhaps Italy’s most celebrated hill and the most prestigious vineyard in the Barolo designation, recognized as the country’s first official cru in 1752. Its altitude, exposure, soil, layout, and microclimate combine to produce Barolo of the highest caliber. Set on a steep, terraced slope, Cannubi was the first vineyard in Langhe to be terraced, enhancing its exceptional hillside exposure with a gradient over 50 degrees. Michele Chiarlo cultivates 4.5 acres of 20-year-old vines here, rooted in marl.
Wine Advocate: 93 Points
From a hot and dry vintage, the Michele Chiarlo 2020 Barolo Cannubi has a pretty bouquet with dark fruit aromas, but the wine does not have the intense focus that we see with Nebbiolo in the cooler vintages. It offers an immediate side with soft cherry flavors and spice. It's a fun and accessible Barolo overall. Production is 3,800 bottles. (ML)
James Suckling: 93 Points
Sun-dried cranberries, stones and oranges on the nose follow through to a juicy, angular palate with firm tannins that grow to a crescendo. Expansive and mineral, with a transparent and linear finish. Drink from 2025.
