Michele Chiarlo’s 2023 “Le Madri” Arneis offers a vibrant Italian counterpoint. Sourced from Roero—a rolling hillside zone on the left bank of the Tanaro River, directly across from Barbaresco—the grapes grow in calcareous marl and sand with excellent drainage, giving the wine its hallmark lift and aromatics. Hand-harvested and softly pressed, the Arneis undergoes cool fermentation to preserve its delicate fruit profile before spending three months on fine lees in stainless steel. The 2023 vintage delivered exceptional quality thanks to a mild winter, a dry spring, and perfectly timed August rains that revived the vines after a warm summer. In the glass, the wine shows intense straw yellow hues with notes of peach, tropical fruit, acacia blossom, and a savory, mineral-inflected finish.
