As the third generation behind Barolo’s legendary Giacomo Conterno, Roberto had already cemented his reputation as one of Piemonte’s most exacting custodians of Nebbiolo. He was not looking to leave Barolo on a whim. But Nervi, founded in 1906 represented something rare. It is the oldest continuously operating winery in Gattinara. A property blessed with historic vineyards of high quality so it offered the opportunity to shepherd another great expression of Nebbiolo into its next era. Having known the estate for years through his friend Erling Astrup, Roberto understood its potential long before it came up for sale. When the chance arrived, he saw not only a historic property but a site capable of producing wines that could stand shoulder to shoulder with the greats of Piemonte.
Gattinara itself is what ultimately makes this project so compelling. Located some 150 kilometers north of Barolo, it is dramatically different in both climate and geology. Where Barolo is defined by calcareous marl, Gattinara rests on ancient volcanic soils formed from a collapsed super-volcano some 280 million years ago. Steep, high elevation vineyards (290–420 meters) and pronounced diurnal shifts give Nebbiolo here a striking aromatic lift and tension. Nervi is fortunate to hold significant parcels in the appellation’s crown jewels: Molsino, a south-facing amphitheater revered since the 15th century for its power and finesse, and Valferana, documented as early as 1231 and known for its cooler, more mineral expression. These sites, combined with Garavoglie and Casacce, form the backbone of Nervi’s benchmark wines.
The 2022 Gattinara reflects both tradition and Conterno precision. Sourced from Molsino, Valferana, Garavoglie, and Casacce, the fruit is hand-harvested and gently destemmed before fermenting in stainless steel with three to four weeks of maceration. Malolactic fermentation takes place in oak, followed by approximately three years in large neutral botti. The volcanic soils speak clearly in the glass: lifted aromatics, firm yet refined
James Suckling: 96 Points
A graceful and perfumed wine with aromas of peaches, wild strawberries, Parma violets, cherry pits and rhubarb with a touch of smoke. Firm and bony on the full-bodied palate, with tense, velvety, slightly dusty tannins. Polished and sleek finish. Drink or hold.
Vinous Media: 93 Points
The 2022 Gattinara delicate and finessed from start to finish. Crushed flowers, bright red-toned fruit, chalk, mint and white pepper give the 2022 striking aromatic top notes. Medium in body and nuanced, the 2022 is a captivating Gattinara that will drink well right out of the gate. Its balance is exquisite.
