We recently had the pleasure of meeting and tasting with Newfound Winemaker Matt Naumann, whose wines stand out as some of the most electric and vibrant in California. While Newfound Winery, operated by Matt and his wife Audra, is based in the Sierra Foothills, it was their Semillon from the heart of Napa Valley that truly impressed us. The wine's unexpectedly fresh and elegant profile caught us off guard, showcasing the unique characteristics of the Yount Mill Vineyard. This vineyard, farmed organically since 1986 and planted on drought-resistant rootstocks, allows for proper yet early ripening, keeping the Semillon's sugars in check.
Newfound's wines are known for their filigreed and beautiful style, a quality that is evident in their patient winemaking approach. Although the grapes mature quickly in the vineyard, the cellar process is deliberately slow. As Matt explains, "Forcing flavor and nuance in Semillon is seemingly impossible. Aside from the fruit harvested, time is our primary ingredient to build flavor." This particular wine underwent a lengthy over 20-month aging process before bottling. Fermentation and elevage involved a variety of oak vessels—1,000L Stockinger demi-muids, 320L 'cigar' barrels, and finally stainless steel for the last two months. This careful and gradual approach allows the wine to develop subtlety and nuance, resulting in an excellent Semillon.
