Siblings Cristiana and Antonio Tiberio have been garnering exceptional critical reviews for some time. Their commitment to indigenous varieties of Abruzzo; Pecorino, Cerasuolo, Trebbiano to name a few. Abruzzo is located on the eastern coast of Italy due east (as the crow flies) of Rome. It is one of Italy’s most prolific wine regions with much of its production getting sent off to cooperatives. It would be generous to say that it’s generally not thought of as a source for excellent wine. Enter the Tiberios.
Pecorino, an ancient grape variety, has always found its home in the mountainous Appennine ridges of the Marche and Abruzzo. Unfortunately, many farmers, favoring easier-to-grow and more productive varieties, gradually abandoned Pecorino, pushing it to the brink of extinction by the 1970s.
In contemporary times, priorities have shifted, with modern wine enthusiasts like the Tiberios are prioritizing high-quality grape varieties over high yields. Pecorino fits just this profile. It’s capable of producing distinctive wines, has experienced a resurgence in popularity. Despite recent widespread plantings, the grape flourishes best in hilly vineyard sites, its natural habitat, as opposed to flatland areas.
The grape's wines boast a unique combination of richness in glycerol and high total acidity, offering a distinctive texture and vibrancy. Recent plantings have expanded the total area under vine to 3 hectares (7.41 acres), with an altitude of 350 meters. The soils consist of limestone with a marly-gravel subsoil, and the average vine age is 21 years.
