When it comes to an ideal archetype of Cabernet Sauvignon from the Napa Valley there are only a handful of wineries whose style has stood the test of time avoiding the whims and fickle fashionable trends of the wine world. Heitz Cellars is one of those wineries. Their style has remained that of classicism. They are easily identified as Cabernet Sauvignon but their profile was not one of heavy extraction. Yes, these wines are full bodied and dark colored but there’s more to them than crazy tasty fruit up front. They offered a note of savory herb, cedar, leather to compliment the fruit profile.
Leon Brendel owned the first vineyard that Joe Heitz would purchase in the 1950s. To this day the winery continues to dutifully produce this unique, delicious wine. It is one of the wine geek treasures of the Napa Valley but that is not why I’m writing today. Brendel is a new branch of the Heitz winery operating at a level appropriate for everyday drinking. What’s exciting about the winery is that the wine delivers high quality by sourcing most of their Cabernet Sauvignon from estate vineyards in St. Helena, Calistoga, and Rutherford. It is also made by Brittany Sherwood, the winemaker at Heitz. She is also the winemaker at Brendel.
