The Campo al Mare Rosso clocks in at 60% Merlot based with 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot. It is aged 12 months in 1yr old French oak barrels and a further 3 months in bottle prior to release. Their vineyards are neighbors to Sassicaia and the Ocean.
Though you might not think it off the top of your head, Italy’s Bolgheri coast shares many similarities with Bordeaux. 1. There’s a large influence of clay in the soil. 2. The climate is mitigated by a large body of water with similar climactic results. 3. Since both are within 1° of latitude with each other the potential total sunshine in each area is relatively similar to each other. It’s no wonder that this area produces high quality Merlot based wines. The success of Merlot here has helped to make it the 5th most widely planted grape in Italy.
James Suckling: 92 Points
The aromas of currants, chocolate and fresh herbs, such as fresh thyme and sage, are very attractive. It’s medium-bodied with medium-chewy tannins and a juicy finish. Slightly rough at the end now, showing wood. Needs three or four years to soften. Try after 2026.
