Galician folklore tells of houses in the wooded areas of Rias Baixas where, witches would gather to cast spells and dance in anticipation of a favorable harvest. Such a scene is portrayed on the label of this bottle.
Albariño is the star in this wine. It comes mostly from grapes grown in the subzone of the Valle de Salnés subzone of Rias Baixas. The valley is known from its original Latin name, Territorium Salinese. During the middle ages the region's salt flats were an important source of salt. Interestingly, the region's wines are known for a saline component in them though that might be more a result of the winery's proximity to the ocean. The ocean's cool breezes also add an incredible energy to the wines carried by the electric acidity it helps preserve. Wines from this area are generally thought to be the general model of what Albariño should be, aromas of lemon and lime mix with riper peach and apricot notes, all over a good backbone of acidity and a certain salinity. Here you get all of that at a fantastic price brought to you by Torre Penalas, Familia Torre's Rias Baixas property. Albariño grapes cultivated in the estate's enclosed 6-hectare vineyard, undergoing fermentation in egg-shaped vats. Freshness is maintained with no oak used.
James Suckling: 90 Points
Oyster shells, fresh lemon zest, fennel and some blanched almonds to the nose. Crisp and medium-bodied on the palate with fresh acidity and some grapefruit skin in the finish
