Château Bernadotte, located in the Saint-Sauveur commune of the Haut-Médoc, sits on 40 hectares of vineyards that border the Pauillac appellation. Its history includes a period under the ownership of neighboring Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, from which it inherited a commitment to precision and excellence. Today, guided by General Manager Guillaume Mottes with the counsel of oenologist Hubert de Boüard (Chateau Angelus), Bernadotte continues to refine its identity as a Cru Bourgeois estate. This wine offers some of the best quality to price ratio in the store!
The vineyards at Bernadotte are planted on a mix of gravel, sand, and clay-limestone soils. These well-draining, heat-retaining soils, paired with the moderating influences of the nearby estuary, ocean, and pine forest, create an ideal setting for Cabernet Sauvignon, which makes up just over half of the plantings. Merlot and a small proportion of Petit Verdot round out the cépage. With an average vine age of 30 years and high-density planting of 10,000 vines per hectare, yields are intentionally kept below the appellation limit to ensure concentration and balance. Aging takes place over 14 to 16 months, with a careful rotation of new and seasoned barrels. The resulting wines are well structured, age worthy yet approachable, elegant and completely delicious now.
Staff Description
Bordeaux is fantastic at producing excellent, age worthy wines in great vintages. The 2018 Chateau Bernadotte is a fine example.
James Suckling: 91 Points
Blackcurrants, black olives and dried herbs with some smoked-meat and charred-wood character. It’s medium-bodied with firm, fine-grained tannins. Focused and flavorful. Lightly chewy. Better from 2024.
