In our opinion, Benjamin makes some of the most exciting wines in Burgundy and his Bourgogne Rouge is no exception. While his source(s) can vary, this cuvee will typically be comprised of village level Pinot Noir parcels from Hautes-Côtes de Nuits, Santenay, Beaune, Ladoix, and Savigny-lès-Beaune. This wine is year in and year out a wonderful example of freshness and purity in Pinot Noir.
Benjamin Leroux cut his teeth at Comte Armand before settling into his own label in 2007. His encyclopedic knowledge and understanding of the Côte d'Or has lead him to unearth previously unknown sites, as he focuses his attention and contracts on top-notch growers who handle well his exacting sense of viticulture. Today Leroux makes small amounts of a wide range of plots throughout the Côte d'Or, some from the more prestigious sites, some not. Regardless, all of Leroux's wines show off his talent for coaxing out the best expression the fruit has to offer, year in and year out.
Burghound: 87 Points
An exuberantly expressive nose combines notes of mostly red berries with plenty of earth character that is also reflected by the succulent, delicious and appealingly textured flavors that conclude in a slightly bitter pit fruit-inflected finish that offers above average depth and persistence for the genre. Solid quality here.
