Le Clos Saint-Jacques is a prestigious 6.7-hectare Premier Cru in Gevrey-Chambertin so exceptional it is widely regarded as a Grand Cru in all but name, distinguished by its unique parcels that run in five vertical strips and steep, high-elevation terroir (290–345m). Within this site, the Domaine Bruno Clair parcel consists of a 1.00-hectare slice (25 rows) featuring Pinot Noir vines planted in 1957 and 1972 .The terroir is geologically complex, characterized by a high proportion of gravel and a unique layer of "laves" (stone slabs) that ensure excellent drainage. Following sustainable and organic practices, the winemaking involves 30–50% whole cluster fermentation and 18–20 months of barrel aging, resulting in a wine celebrated for its vibrant red fruit and consistent elegance that often rivals the village’s official Grand Crus.
James Suckling: 96-97 Points
All the power and concentration we associate with this great premier cru site but married to fabulously pure dark cherry fruit and a stunning vitality. Great wet-earth complexity develops as it aerates in the glass. The amazingly vibrant finish goes on and on.
Vinous Media: 94-96 Points
The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru offers an extremely focused and detailed bouquet with vibrant, mineral-inflected redcurrant and strawberry fruit. The medium-bodied palate features ripe dark cherry and strawberry on the entry, with a hint of vanilla from the oak. It finishes quite linear in style, as if it's holding something back for later. This is one for the patient among you.
Wine Advocate: 93-95 Points
The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques offers up aromas of wild berries and plums mingled with orange zest, rose petals and violets. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and lively, with a fleshy core of fruit and sweet structuring tannins, it's another terrific cuvée from this reenergized domaine.
Burghound: 92-95 Points
A wonderfully broad-ranging nose reflects plenty of floral influences along with a lovely array of spice elements on the airy and cool mix of both red and dark berries. The equally cool, pure and relatively dense medium weight flavors coat the palate with sap while displaying impressive depth and persistence on the very firm, compact and unapologetically built-to-age finale. Excellent provided that you have the patience to cellar this for at least a decade.
