If you’ve ever talked with us about Benjamin Leroux, you’ll know we have a soft spot for his Savigny-les-Beaune. Year after year it’s one of our favorite village wines — and for good reason. It’s immediately approachable, well priced, and if you have the patience to cellar it, the wine has the structure to go five years or more with ease. (Currently, the 2020s we've tried remarkable).
What makes it so compelling? First, Benjamin himself. He caught the wine bug as a teenager, studied winemaking from the age of 15, and by 24 was already crafting wines professionally. Winemaking wasn’t just a career path for him — it was the only thing he ever wanted to do.
Second, Savigny-les-Beaune is a village with uniquely diverse vineyard exposures, thanks to the Rhoin River that runs through it. North, northeast, south, southeast — each parcel catches the light differently. Benjamin blends three parcels here, including fruit from the 1er Cru “Aux Fournaux,” giving him both balance and depth no matter the vintage conditions. It’s this patchwork of terroir that adds so much nuance to the wine.
Finally, the proof is in the glass. When we visited Benjamin in February, he poured us samples that had been bottled just a day or two earlier — and they were already vibrant, expressive, and delicious. That’s rare and winmakers are normally quite wary to do anything of the sort. It tells you everything: this is a wine that shines early, but has the backbone to reward a handful of years in the cellar.
Burghound: 87-89 Points
Here too the nose is expressive but with more dark fruit adding breadth to the even earthier nose that displays a floral top note. The rich, sappy and generously proportioned flavors possess solid intensity before concluding in a dusty, mildly austere and softly rustic finale. To drink young or with 4 to 7 years of keeping.
