The historic village of Volpaia—a place dedicated to grape and olive growing since the 11th century—is as warm and captivating as the wines it produces. Nestled in the heart of Chianti Classico, Volpaia’s organically farmed Sangiovese continues to set new benchmarks, with each vintage refining the balance between elegance and structure.
The 2021 Chianti Classico Riserva is crafted from a selection of the estate’s finest vineyards, including Casavecchia, Castellino, Santa Caterina, and Vignavecchia, situated between 400-600 meters above sea level on soils rich in sandstone, clay, and limestone. The season began with cooler-than-average spring temperatures and above-normal rainfall, followed by a hot, dry summer that encouraged slow, even ripening. The harvest, conducted manually between September 27 and October 15, delivered fruit with remarkable concentration and freshness.
Aged 24 months in French and Slavonian oak and 3 months in bottle, this Riserva continues Volpaia's commitment to over-delivering in whatever wine they release. The 2021 Riserva is already showing beautifully but promises even greater rewards with time.
Wine Spectator: 95 Points
This expressive red features cherry, blackberry, pomegranate and orange peel aromas and flavors. Mineral and wild herb accents add depth as this cruises to the long finish, offering terrific balance and length. Though impressive now, this should evolve nicely. Best from 2026 through 2042. 5,000 cases made, 3,000 cases imported.
Vinous Media: 94 Points
The 2021 Chianti Classico Riserva is fabulous. Vibrant and translucent in the glass, it offers so much pedigree. Dark cherry, leather, licorice, tobacco and lavender are some of the many nuances that open in the glass. Readers will find a deceptively mid-weight Riserva endowed with notable poise

The 2021 Chianti Classico Riserva is entirely Sangiovese from Radda and was raised for two years in oak casks. It opens to a polished yet pure profile with aromas of lavender, grenadine, sweet sage, and fresh leather. It offers fantastic tension and energy on the palate, with coiled acidity, compact tannins, and a supple ripeness of fruit to round it out beautifully, with a salty finish. I would be thrilled to have this gorgeous wine stashed in my cellar to check back on over the coming 10-15 years.
James Suckling: 93 Points
A textured, driven and flavorful riserva with aromas of dark cherries, wild currants, dried herbs and some stones. It’s medium-bodied with fine, firm tannins. Focused and precise, with a velvety core of succulent cherries at the center and a solid and harmonious frame of tannins. Lively and flavorful finish with excellent length. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.
