In the northwestern reaches of the Montagne de Reims, Chartogne-Taillet produces exciting Champagnes that we've been smitten since they were introduced to us years ago.
Hors Série offers a rare detour outside of Merfy. For this special edition, winemaker Alexandre turned to the grand cru villages of Avize and Oger in the Côte des Blancs, sourcing Chardonnay from old vines planted between 1927 and 1986. Fermented with native yeasts, aged for nine months in neutral oak, and then rested for over three years in bottle, this wine is produced in tiny quantities—just 2,200 bottles. Availability is therefore very limited.

Chartogne’s 2020 Blanc de Blancs Hors Série is showing superbly. It opens with a deep bouquet of orange zest, ripe pear and white blossoms mingling with lemon confit. Full-bodied and concentrated, the wine retains striking vitality, with a generous core of fruit enlivened by an incisive spine of acidity and a pronounced chalky signature. Discerning readers will recall that this cuvée hails from a selection of sun-soaked parcels in Avize, primarily situated on the lower slopes with shallow soils, and is vinified exclusively in oak.
