In the northwestern reaches of the Montagne de Reims, Chartogne-Taillet produces exciting Champagnes that we've been smitten since they were introduced to us years ago.
At the heart of the range is Sainte Anne, a cuvée that captures the essence of the domaine’s philosophy. A 50/50 blend of Chardonnay and red grapes (primarily Pinot Noir), Sainte Anne is built not just from a single vintage but from a tapestry of harvests. Typically, half of the blend comes from the most recent year, while the other half is drawn from reserve wines aged between two to five years. This multi-vintage approach lends the wine remarkable consistency and layered complexity.
Sainte Anne undergoes vinification and aging in a mix of 228-, 350-, and 2,000-liter barrels, with a portion of the reserve wines aged in tank. Each parcel is handled individually—some in topped-up barrels, others not—allowing the unique personality of each site to emerge. This careful, oxygen-conscious approach reflects the winery’s belief that the sandy limestone soils of Merfy require a delicate balance to fully express their clarity. The resulting wine is taut, finely textured, and unmistakably delicious calling card for the estate.
James Suckling: 93 Points
Even parts of chardonnay and pinot noir naturally fermented in a combination of stainless steel and wood, this has a beautifully pure and fresh nose with almonds, brioche, lemon, chalky stony aromas, light rose, vanilla and strawberry. Beautifully nuanced and detailed palate with a super fine thread of acidity that fuses perfectly ripe fruit that is coated in a sheen of very smooth polished tannins. Delicate, seamless and long, crisp apple finish. Drink now.
