Domaine François Raveneau, a family-run domaine whose name is synonymous with purity, tension, and the unmistakable expression of Chardonnay grown on Chablis’ ancient Kimmeridgian limestone. Founded by François Raveneau and expanded through the 1960s and ’70s into a mosaic of jewel-like parcels, the domaine now rests in the hands of third-generation cousins Isabelle joining in 2010 and Maxime since 2017.For decades, wine lovers worldwide have placed Raveneau among the absolute elite of Burgundy, and for many—including us—their wines have been a source of awe and inspiration.
Raveneau’s reputation rests on an unwavering commitment to traditional winemaking and meticulous vineyard work. Viticulture is largely natural, with low yields enforced through severe winter pruning and harvesting always done by hand. In the cellar, the family has long embraced gentle pressing, extended lees contact, and aging in small, neutral feuillettes—older barrels that contribute no overt oak flavor but allow the wines to slowly unfurl. Fermentations occur mostly in cuve, malolactic proceeds at its own pace, and élevage lasts a full year, giving the wines their signature combination of steel, mineral depth, and slow-building complexity.
Montée de Tonnerre—one of Chablis’ most coveted premier crus considered by many to be on par with top grands crus. At Raveneau, this makes magic.
Burghound: 92 Points
Along with the Blanchots this is the most floral wine in the range with its elegant nose of pear, apple, spice and soft apricot nuances that exhibit just enough Chablis typicity to be persuasive. There is a lovely sense of vibrancy to the delicious and very rounded medium-bodied flavors that possess fine depth and excellent length on the mouth coating and powerful finish. While not quite at its usual level this is certainly a fine effort in the context of the vintage. *Outstanding*
Vinous Media: 92 Points
Pale, bright yellow. Tangy aromas of orange, lemon, crushed stone and smoke. Fine-grained and deep, displaying lovely depth to its citrus and floral flavors. Showing a bit more oak than most of the other 2013s, as the Raveneaus used what Bernard described as 'younger old barrels' to age this wine. In an essentially fruity, supple style, finishing with good energy and fresh herbal lift.
