This 1.3-hectare Pinot Noir vineyard, planted between 1933 and 2005, lies mid-slope near Couchey on limestone and marl soils. Sustainably farmed, the wine is cold-macerated, fermented with ambient yeasts in concrete, and aged 12 months in barrel (20% new) without fining or filtration. Gentle pump-overs and late punch-downs guide extraction. This is a perennial favorite amongst the staff and enthusiasts of value.
Amélie Berthaut has become one of the most dynamic winemakers in modern Burgundy since she merged her parent's estates in 20213. With vineyards inherited from both her father (Berthaut in Fixin) and mother (Gerbet in Vosne-Romanée) hers is a domaine straddling both the hidden corners of the Côte de Nuits and its most iconic villages and vineyards.
Amélie turned heads by redefining what’s possible in Fixin. Her versions were revelations, cool, lifted fruit and soft textures laid waste to the notion that decades were needed before any Fixin could be accessible but, here's the catch, they are still age worthy!
The 2023 vintage marks a new chapter — both in the vineyard and in the cellar. After years of working in tight quarters, Amélie finally had the space to work comfortably in her completely redesigned winery. And she had a generous harvest to fill it: a rare season of ease.
Stylistically, 2023 is a perfect match for Amélie’s gentle touch: minimal extraction, increasing use of whole clusters (though mostly limited by fermenter size), and restrained use of new oak — around 20% for most cuvées. The resulting wines emphasize elegance, clarity, and tenderness, with cool fruit and soft textures. They’re captivatingly drinkable in youth but built on a foundation that bodes well for the cellar. The 2023s from Berthaut-Gerbet are well worth your attention.
