In most books you'll see Bonnes-Mares (14.99ha) listed as a Grand Cru of the village Chambolle-Musigny. This is true, but it's also a Grand Cru of Chambolle's neighbor to the north with a portion (1.52ha) in Morey-Saint-Denis. In the Cote de Nuits, this is the only Grand Cru vineyard to overlap villages.
Bonnes-Mares' style is impacted by it's two soil types, terre blanche and terre rouge which divide the vineyard diagonally from the lower portion at the southern end of the vineyard towards the upper part in Morey. On the lower portion of the vineyard are the terre rouge soils, heavy in iron and clay. This is where the powerful backbone of many Bonnes-Mares comes from. The upper portion is the terre blanche where the fossil rich soils bring out the minerality and touch of elegance.
Of course, this is all relative. These comparisons are only meaningful within the framework of the Bonnes-Mares vineyard. You can generally count on Bonnes-Mares to show a richer, more muscular style. Many even see it as closer to Morey-Saint-Denis than to Chambolle, precisely because of this character.
70% terres rouges and 30% terres blanches
