High-Altitude Legacy of G.D. Vajra
Perched high in the hills of Barolo, G.D. Vajra is a deeply rooted family estate whose story stretches back to the late 19th century, when the Vajra family first farmed the famed Bricco delle Viole vineyard. It was Aldo Vajra, however, who transformed that legacy into a respected estate after taking the reins in 1968 with a vision well beyond his years. A pioneer of organic farming in the region as early as 1971, Aldo championed biodiversity, revived native varieties like Freisa, and embraced meticulous vineyard work based on those tenets. Today, alongside his wife Milena and their children Giuseppe, Francesca, and Isidoro, the family farms 40 hectares across prized sites including Bricco delle Viole, Fossati, and Coste de Vergne. Their high-elevation vineyards, cooled by constant breezes, are key to the house style, Barolos of finesse, perfume, and layered complexity over sheer power.

The 2021 Barolo Albe is a beautifully transparent expression of Nebbiolo and an amazing value at $35/btl. Blending fruit from multiple high-altitude sites with varying exposures from southeast to southwest. This diversity of vineyard aspects brings both structure and aromatic lift and ensuring full phenolic ripeness without sacrificing freshness. Fermented in custom vertical tanks with gentle extraction and an average of 25 days of maceration, the wine captures Nebbiolo’s signature and balances elegance and intensity. Aging for 30–36 months in large Slavonian oak casks preserves purity of fruit and terroir expression, avoiding the imprint of new wood. The result is a Barolo that is very approachable and quite age-worthy.

Do you have a favorite pair of jeans or a favorite dress that you keep in your closet for all occasions? That's the equivalent of this wine. The G.D. Vajra 2021 Barolo Albe is an enormously versatile expression of Nebbiolo, with an affordable price, that offers more value for your money than most Barolos out there. The bouquet focuses on dark berry, pressed flower and crushed stone. It offers good sharpness over broad lines. The mouthfeel is medium-plus in texture and it closes with silky, accessible tannins. Fruit comes from three cru sites: Coste di Vergne, Fossati and La Volta. (ML)

The 2021 Barolo Albe continues to be one of the best values the region has to offer and punches far above its weight class in this vintage. The nose is ripe with fresh, layered notes of pure red cherries, fresh flowers, anise, and refined spices. The palate is fantastic and pure, with a long finish. This is one of the best vintages of this wine I have tasted to date, revealing great definition of structure and a refreshing feel that makes this a fantastic go-to option to check in on again and again as it ages. I would snap these up and get a case or two if you can. Drink over the coming 15-20 years. (AF)
