The Michele Chiarlo estate has been a benchmark for Piedmont winemaking since 1956, when Michele Chiarlo himself set out to craft wines that would reflect the true essence of the region. His relentless pursuit of excellence and commitment to site-specific winemaking elevated the estate’s reputation, showcasing the unique terroirs and grape varieties of Piedmont. Nestled in the heart of the Barolo appellation, the estate produces wines that are distinguished by their refined balance—marrying aromatic complexity with supple, silky tannins.
Among the estate’s prized holdings is a collection of vineyards spanning 110 hectares, a true patchwork of some of Langhe’s most revered sites. Made only in exceptional vintages, Michele Chiarlo has produces a Riserva cuvée from the historic Cerequio vineyard. Planted in 1972, this 0.90-hectare parcel rests on a clayey, marly-limestone soil that provides structure and depth to the wine. The 2016 vintage will be remembered for a long time for its rare quality of excellence. It was a harvest characterized by a climate that followed the normal patterns of the seasons, without meteorological anomalies, producing very healthy grapes and allowing them to reach a perfect and uniform ripening in the classic time frame. An excellent vintage.
Wine Spectator: 95 Points
The 2016 vintage is still young but is not too far away from its prime drinking window. Held back for more aging at the winery, the Michele Chiarlo 2016 Barolo Riserva Cerequio has only begun to turn away from primary intensity. There are aromas of dried fruit and pressed rose that follow a long, polished mouthfeel. This is a full-bodied effort from Cerequio with rich fruit weight and spicy oak tannins.
