Since 1469 Feudo Montoni has been producing wines from its grounds south of Palermo, with contemporary farming focused on organic grapevines, minimal intervention in the winery, and sustainable energy. Fabio Sireci prides himself in mono-varietal wines that celebrate the spirit of Sicily, and in his vineyards, indigenous varieties like Perricone thrive!
Feudo Montoni’s Perricone “del Core” is a wine made with Perricone grapes sourced from a special cru known as Core. The vineyard earned its name generations ago from the farmers of Montoni; in Sicilian, “core” means “heart,” and from above, the vineyard indeed resembles the shape of a heart. Grown at an altitude of 500 meters the vines — 40 years old and hand-grafted onto wild rootstocks — thrive in clay-sandy soils with an east-facing exposure.
Perricone, is a red grape native to Sicily, producing wines with red berry flavors and medium to full body. It can be bottled on its own or blended with Nero d'Avola, Frappato, even international varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Perricone also plays a role in Marsala Rubino, a fortified wine style. But this offering, as a monovarietal, is closer to a Pinot Noir with the aromatics of a Nebbiolo. The Core vineyard is farmed organically and meticulously by hand. Harvesting is also done by hand and grapes collected into small cases. In the cellar, fermentation occurs naturally in cement containers, where even the malolactic fermentation happens spontaneously. Aging continues with eight months in cement, followed by three months in barrels, and then three months resting in the bottle.
