Germany—where Liepold's striking Pinot Noir is quietly changing perceptions of reds from the area. The 2016 Leipold Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir in German) is part of the winery’s first-ever library release, and we jumped at the opportunity to offer it after a tasting last year. Peter Leipold, the next-generation winemaker at Weingut Leipold in Obervolkach, is part of a small but mighty wave of young talent reshaping Franken wine. After time working with Klaus Peter Keller he so impressed his ‘boss’ that Klaus said “For me, Peter Leipold is on the way to becoming a young genius… He worked for two years here at our winery before leaving for Liger-Belair… "What Peter does with Pinot and Silvaner in Franconia reminds me of what Julian Haart is doing in the Mosel… Peter’s wines touch my heart.” Peter brings a Burgundian touch to his homeland. His top Pinot Noir comes from the “filet” portion of the Landsknecht Muschelkalk hill, a southwest-facing site planted with 27-year-old French clones sourced via the famous wine merchant, Daniel Twardowski. This wine is all free-run juice, fermented with 40% whole clusters and aged in 40% new François Frères barrels, alongside seasoned oak from both DRC and Liger-Belair. It’s serious wine, made with intention and precision.
For a region rarely recognized for red wines, Franken may just have found its next ambassador in Peter Leipold. His approach—thoughtful, near-natural, and rooted in soil expression—yields wines that are anything but ordinary. This Pinot Noir is obscure in origin but absolutely world-class in quality.
