Organically farmed by the Mascheroni Stianti family, the 2020 Volpaia “Castelprile” Rosso Riserva marks their first venture beyond Chianti Classico and into the coastal hills of Maremma Toscana. Planted between 2001 and 2004, the Castelprile vineyard sits just five miles from the sea, on soils of sand, clay, and gravel above the remnants of an ancient coastal lake once called Prelius. These maritime influences, along with afternoon breezes off the Tuscan Archipelago, help preserve freshness and aromatic lift in a region better known for its warmth and sun.
The 2020 vintage brought early budbreak and flowering, followed by a hot, dry summer with almost no rain until the end of August—conditions that contributed to an early harvest and wines of ripeness and concentration. A blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 10% Sangiovese, the wine was fermented with native yeasts and aged for 18 months in French oak barriques. In the glass, it’s a vivid ruby with purple highlights, offering layers of black plum, cherry, and wild blackberry, wrapped in sweet spice, balsamic tones, and a hint of coastal herb. The palate is broad and mouthfilling, with juicy fruit, firm tannins, and a long, persistent finish.
