Nardi's Brunello di Montalcino, Poggio Doria, is called the "wine of sunset," as it comes from the northwest side of Montalcino, where its vineyards enjoys an elevated southwest to northwest exposure. Situated at approximately 853 feet above sea level, the soils are a mix of sand, and clay. Owner, Emilia Nardi says this vineyard always produces Brunellos that offer refined tannins, and complexity. It's a classic!
Crafted from 100% Sangiovese Grosso, this Brunello di Montalcino DOCG undergoes 34 months of aging—18 months in French oak tonneaux (Allier), followed by 16 months in large Slavonian oak barrels—before an additional 16 months of bottle aging.
The 2019 vintage benefited from balanced weather conditions, with sufficient water reserves and moderate temperatures allowing for slow, even ripening. This resulted in a wine of exceptional phenolic and technological maturity. In the glass, it displays an intense ruby-red hue, offering a complex bouquet of red berries, spices, and mineral notes, with balsamic undertones. On the palate, it is full-bodied and persistent, showcasing elegant structure, velvety tannins, and remarkable depth.
James Suckling: 95 Points
Fresh roses and violets with red cherries and sandalwood in both the nose and palate. It’s medium- to full-bodied and firm-tannined with a bright, racy finish. Give it three to four years to come together
Wine Advocate: 94 Points
The Tenute Silvio Nardi 2020 Brunello di Montalcino Vigneto Poggio Doria (with just 3,500 bottles made) is a very different wine compared to the village expression from this same vintage. Whereas that wine showed more dry fruit aromas, this wine has a sweeter side with plump richness and soft tannins. It also carries more fruit weight and overall textural richness. Between the two, I recommend this one.
