The 2020 vintage has become continued Chianti Classico's string of very good vintages in recent years, producing powerful, approachable wines that still manage elegance and complexity. With a traditional approach and commitment to single vineyard expressions, Tenuta di Bibbiano is one of the great houses in the Classico region.
Founded in 1865 the estate covers 25ha of vineyards between 270-310m in elevation. At the core of the winery's philosophy has been a commitment to 100% indigenous Tuscan varieties with a focus on Sangiovese based wines. Recently, that philosophy has also welcomed organic viticulture (official in 2011) and a new focus on quality.
The 2020 Vigna del Capannino is a single-vineyard Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, crafted exclusively from 100% Sangiovese Grosso grapes grown in the Capannino vineyard overlooking Monteriggioni. This special cru, a true monopole of Bibbiano’s estate, is rooted in limestone, giving the wine remarkable structure and depth. Harvested by hand in early October, the grapes undergo a long 33-day fermentation in cement vats maximizes extraction and finesse. Aging takes place over 24 months, divided between French and Slavonian oak barrels and traditional cement, followed by an additional six months in bottle before release. Just 15,000 bottles were produced — a vivid, terroir-driven expression of a historic site.

The 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Capannino is terrific. In fact, it is one of the best wines I have tasted here in some time. A blast of wild cherry, plum, lavender, spice, menthol, licorice and dried flowers makes a strong opening statement. Deep and layered, with tons of energy, the 2020 is super impressive.
