Justin Willett, renowned for his mastery of the California wine region, exemplifies the expertise seen in Tyler winery's creations. Hailing from Santa Barbara, Justin initiated Tyler in 2005, initially operating with eight barrels discreetly nestled in the corner of Arcadian Winery. Serving as assistant winemaker, he refined his techniques, particularly focusing on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. A steadfast advocate for old vines, Justin has since forged connections with the esteemed historic vineyards of Santa Barbara, including the renowned Sanford & Benedict, La Rinconada, and La Encantada Vineyards, situated in the Sta. Rita Hills. In 2017, he embarked on the establishment of a forty-five-acre Sta. Rita Hills estate vineyard, christened Mae Estate, dedicated to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir cultivation.
Amidst the picturesque backdrop of the winegrowing region, characterized by transverse ranges and valleys, where hills adorned with marine sediment bask in the ocean's breezes, Justin crafts wines distinguished by their clarity and finesse. Rooted in the notion of terroir, he emphasizes that these qualities are intricately tied to the land and environment, delicately revealed rather than manufactured in the cellar.
In the realm of wine technicalities, the sources for this particular blend include Bien Nacido Vineyard, Dierberg Vineyard, La Rinconada Vineyard, and Sanford & Benedict Vineyard, each contributing its distinct character. With an alcohol by volume (ABV) of 12.8%, the vine age spans from plantings in 1973, 1990, 1997, and 1971, showcasing a spectrum of maturity. The soil composition varies from loam to sandy loam, clay loam, and shale, adding layers of complexity to the wine's profile.
