Les Fuées is an outstanding Premier Cru vineyard in Chambolle-Musigny. We like to think of it as an extension of the great Grand Cru Bonnes-Mares as it borders that esteemed Grand Cru. Much of what makes Bonnes-Mares so famous carries over to Les Fuées. It sits at the same altitude—between 280 and 300 meters, just above the road that connects Chambolle to Morey-Saint-Denis. It shares the same limestone bedrock and similarly stony, well-drained soils.
Among Chambolle-Musigny's Premier Crus, Les Fuées stands out for its firm personality. Unlike the delicate floral charm of Les Amoureuses or the silkiness of wines from Chambolle village, Fuées wines are more mineral and earthy in character, with a core of darker fruits. On the palate, they show fuller body and depth, with a structure that supports aging.
The name Les Fuées has feudal origins: in old French, a “fuée” (or “fouée”) referred to the amount of land a peasant could hoe in a day, and by extension, the number of working days a lord could require from his subjects to tend his vines. The hoe—a simple tool with a wooden handle and flat iron blade—was ideal for shallow soil work, allowing for fast weeding, hilling, and aeration. Given the rocky, labor-intensive nature of the site, it’s easy to imagine that it would have demanded many such days of toil.
