Santenots du Milieu the best of the six lieu-dits of the overarching vineyard, Santenots. It’s right in the heart of the vineyard, 8ha in total. Domaine des Comtes Lafon owns nearly half of it! The vineyard and all its lieu-dit are located in Meursault but are allowed to be labeled as Volnay. The vineyard is rich in clay, more so than is typical in Volnay, so in the diaspora that is Volnay, the wines do come across full with rich textures when compared to other Volnay.
Dominique Lafon's vines were planted in 1944, 1962, 1965, 1978.
Vinous Media: 94-96 Points
For the first time, the Volnay Les Santenots-du-Milieu contains 50% whole clusters, which they believe adds more freshness to the wine. I think it gives another layer of complexity: black plum, violet, briar and just a touch of graphite. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent tannins and gentle grip, gaining body and depth towards a harmonious and minerally finish. Excellent. NB In 2023, they de-stemmed 100%, so the whole bunches are subject to the growing season.(NM)
Wine Advocate: 93 Points
Revisited in bottle, the 2022 Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots-du-Milieu opens in the glass with aromas of plums, sweet wild berries and spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and charming palate that's suave and integrated out of the gates. The 2023 vintage is another success from Domaine des Comtes Lafon, now headed by Léa and Pierre Lafon, delivering both quantity and quality like 2022 before it, though in a somewhat fleshier, more extroverted style. While a few new cuvées have joined the range, for now, no big changes are afoot, and Dominque Lafon continues to be a guiding presence. Organic and biodynamic farming in the vineyards, barrel fermentation for whites, two winters' élevage on the lees for both colors and bottling under Diam technical corks (since 2013) continue to be the order of the day.(WK)
Burghound: 92-95 Points
Note: from a huge 3.78 ha holding of 40+ year old vines planted in shallow, high clay content soil sitting above a bed of solid limestone. Slightly riper and markedly spicier aromas of poached plum, dark currant and a suggestion of earth enjoy a variety of floral influences and in particular violet. There is excellent volume and better mid-palate density to the focused and powerful larger-bodied flavors that conclude in a compact, serious and bult-to-age finale. This is impressive and wine that should age gracefully over the next 20 years. Strongly worth considering.*Burghound Sweet Spot Outstanding!*
