Nestled in the southern reaches of Piedmont, near Genoa, lies the historic Rovereto hillside—the Great Cru of Gavi. This revered site spans 148 acres in the municipality of Gavi, where the Cortese grape thrives in its ideal environment. The name "Rovereto," meaning oak wood, pays homage to ancient forests that once covered the area. Beneath the surface, the dark red clay soil, rich in iron and abundant with stones, contributes to the wine’s hallmark complexity and minerality.
Rovereto benefits from a unique microclimate, where cooling sea breezes from the Ligurian Sea meet crisp mountain winds from the Apennines. This interplay ensures optimal ripening of Cortese grapes while maintaining their natural acidity. The Michele Chiarlo vines, averaging 25 years old, are meticulously managed, with bunches thinned in late summer to concentrate flavors. A portion of the hand-harvested grapes undergoes cold pressing to preserve delicate aromas, followed by gentle pressing and fermentation at low temperatures. The wine then rests on the lees in stainless steel tanks for five months, further enhancing its elegance and texture before bottle refinement
