Perched above the Pacific on the rugged Sonoma Coast, Hirsch Vineyards is a benchmark estate for California Pinot Noir. Founded by David Hirsch in the early 1980s, the vineyard sits within the Fort Ross–Seaview appellation near the ocean, where elevations up to 1,500 feet and cooling ocean breezes help shape wines that could easily be mistaken for those across the pond.
The Reserve Estate Pinot Noir represents the pinnacle of the property. First produced in 2009, it’s a selection of the finest barrels from the estate’s oldest blocks, offering the most complete expression of this singular coastal site.
The 2020 Reserve shows dark fruit, formidable tannins, and impressive concentration—a wine of depth and structure reminiscent of the 2015s.
James Suckling: 97 Points
So much hibiscus and purple fruit, together with dried citrus and minerals. It’s full, yet vivid and energetic, with fantastic length and intensity. Amazing linear strength and energy. This is from the best barrels of their production. A triumph for the vintage. Drinkable on release in 2023, but even better in 2024.
