Perched above the Pacific on the rugged Sonoma Coast, Hirsch Vineyards is a benchmark estate for California Pinot Noir. Founded by David Hirsch in the early 1980s, the vineyard sits within the Fort Ross–Seaview appellation near the ocean, where elevations up to 1,500 feet and cooling ocean breezes help shape wines that could easily be mistaken for those across the pond.
The Reserve Estate Pinot Noir represents the pinnacle of the property. First produced in 2009, it’s a selection of the finest barrels from the estate’s oldest blocks, offering the most complete expression of this singular coastal site.
The 2021 Reserve, by contrast, emerged from a nearly ideal growing season. It is sleek and expressive, with layers of cherry, cassis, and coastal earth.
James Suckling: 98 Points
Aromas of grilled seaweed, oyster shell and iodine with ripe strawberry and citrus rind. Full-bodied with lots of juicy fruit and structure. Fine tannins that are toned and focused. Excellent length. Holding back still. Try after 2026.
