Arnaldo Caprai makes our favorite wines coming out of Montefalco, bringing recognition to a well-deserving but often overlooked Italian wine region: Umbria. As so many stories go, a pioneering father with a heart that beats for his home invests in property, and innovative, dedicated offspring bring dreams of high quality wines to fruition. Here in Montefalco, Marco Caprai's experiments with clonal selection, trellising, and high-density planting have resulted in impressive results. For this, Wine Enthusiast named Arnaldo Caprai 2012's Winery of the Year.
The Montefalco Rosso has been produced since 1975 and is an excellent way to get introduced to the Sagrantino grape which shines in this area. When produced as a monovarietal wine, Sagrantino has a reputation for being tannic and requiring long cellaring to soften. This rosso attempts rather successfully to enjoy the character of the grape by blending with Sangiovese and Merlot. The Sagrantino represents about 15% of the overall blend (Sangiovese 70% & Merlot 15%) its presence is known through the structure which is not so high as to overpower its accessibility now but not so low to hinder some slight aging (6-8yr).
Wine Advocate: 90 Points
The bouquet on the 2016 Montefalco Rosso is very floral and bright with aromas of wild rose and lavender that feel etched and pronounced in this vintage. The Sangiovese element was slightly reduced in this blend, and the Sagrantino component does come through loud and clear. I notice it especially in the firmness and tightness of the mouthfeel.
