Domaine des Baumard is situated right in the heart of the Anjou, in the town of Rochefort-Sur-Loire, just south of the town of Savennières itself. The property has been in the Baumard family since 1634, but it was reconstituted and improved by Jean Baumard in the mid-1950s. Since 1992 the estate has been run with meticulous care by Jean's son, Florent, and the Domaine is now regarded as one of the greatest producers in the Loire Valley and one of the greatest producers of white wine in the world.
The incredible dry wines of Domaine des Baumard are second to none. Yet because they're made from Chenin Blanc in a rather unknown part of the Loire Valley (Savennieres) they continue to fly under the radar. As was mentioned in the Wine Advocate "If [Florent Baumard] had been born a Californian, Burgundian, or Bordelais, wealthy vineyard owners would be standing in line to employ his services as a consultant...A young, handsome, ever-smiling sort, Baumard quietly fashions some of the world's most complex dry and sweet wines in the sleepy village of Rochefort-sur-Loire."
To us Baumard's Clos du Papillon is a vineyard that deserves special attention. Located on the banks of the Loire river, it is known for its schist based soil with a little bit of volcanic rock interspersed throughout. As many of you can probably deduce, this is the "Butterfly Clos" which is a reference to the shape of the vineyard as seen from above. Florent Baumard owns the eastern "wing." Here his Chenin Blanc vines average a robust 35 years of age.
